Manfred & Heidi - Lunch together the day we met (May 10, 2016)
At the Halle Nervenklinik where Georg Cantor died
Lunch at Auerbachs-Keller, Leipzig (a setting in Goethe's Faust)
Heidi and Manfred at the Monument to the Battle of hte Nations (near Leipzig) - Later in the day we were asked, in all seriousness, if we were in Leipzig for the goth festival.
Doing math in Georg Cantor's classroom (where Manfred also taught)
No need for Google Translate - we speak Math
Stopped off for a snack and bumped into some retired colleagues of Manfred - good times! (I didn't understand a single word, but that made no difference.)
Outside a museum where there was some sort of battle demonstration about to take place - which had absolutely nothing to do with math.
"Mathematical Evangelism" - Manfred showing off his book to our waiter at the Halle Eis Cafe:
Bits and pieces of Manfred's book are in English:
Waiting for a train - so nice of the guy there with us to provide the sound track. Manfred's grin, though! :-)
Time for me to leave. Always the gentleman, Manfred is taking care of my luggage for me:
His last words spoken to me as we parted: "I'm going to stand here until the very last second."
OH WOW! I just realized this was almost exactly 10 years ago. This was Saturday, May 14, 2016. Today is May 19, 2026. I miss my friend!
This blog started out as a sharing between me and my book coach over a year of working on the first draft of my novel. The more money I save, the more I can travel, and travel is something I need to do for my writing. Usually it all works out OK. But here are a few that were a challenge, and more than challenging, for me in one way or another. SMALLEST (Milan) I certainly don't want to disparage this place, as the AirBnB owners did warn me (repeatedly) after I booked about how small it was, and asking if I was OK with that. But the price was right, and the location couldn't be beat. It might actually not be the smallest place (in terms of square footagae) that I've stayed in, but because it was an attic space, the ceiling sloped precipitously down toward the outer wall,...
Here is the cookbook I was telling you about today. It has two parts. The first is about making soaps, toothpaste, etc. The second is FOOD (mostly sweets). Below is a pic of a sample from the table of contents. I love how beautiful this book is - botanical illustrations interspersed with the recipes. Close up of title for cherry jelly recipe (titles were all LONG then). The last two pics just show more of the artistry - bit blurry on the last one -
